What is Counselling?

Each of us encounters a variety of problems and losses throughout our lives. At times these can seem overwhelming and cause further challenges with our relationships, families, work and happiness. At such times the process of counselling can provide help.

The terms ‘counselling’ and ‘psychotherapy’ are often used interchangeably. Counselling or the process of psychotherapy is about a safe place for you to explore and express your issues, concerns and fears, whether these are past or present. Frequently it is about discovering and accepting who you are on the inside as well as the outside. Counselling can often assist in the journey of self-discovery, and enable you to recognise what it is you need in order to grow and reach your full potential.

Counsellors are trained to listen and try to understand what you are feeling. You will not be given advice or opinions, but will be offered an opportunity to look at your situation from several angles so that you can decide for yourself what you would like to try and do about it. You will be helped to recognise and draw on your own strengths and resources. You may even discover new qualities you didn’t know you had. Not only is counselling a place to explore difficult issues, it is also a space in which to grow and develop.
